State attorneys general have been incredibly busy since January 20, 2025. As Donald Trump and his administration continue attempting to impose illegal or unconstitutional policies on Americans almost every day, these AGs have been instrumental in stopping executive actions that threaten the well-being of residents across this country—from attempts to strip funds from education and cancer research to abusing sensitive personal and medical data and indiscriminately firing hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

State Attorneys General Protecting Medicaid and Affordable Health Coverage

State attorneys general have long played a critical role in safeguarding access to health care for millions of Americans, particularly through vigorous defense of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and opposition to policies that undermine Medicaid. While their legal authority varies by state, attorneys general are uniquely positioned to serve as both the legal and public advocates for the health and well-being of their constituents. In the face of federal and state efforts to restrict health coverage, especially for low-income communities, attorneys general have stepped forward to challenge unlawful policies, defend statutory protections, and push for greater equity in public health systems.

State Attorney General Birthright Citizenship Cases at the Supreme Court

On May 15, 2025, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a set of cases brought by 23 Democratic state attorneys general (AGs) and a nonprofit group to defend a foundational guarantee: that all persons born on U.S. soil are American citizens. The question before the Court is whether the type of relief the AGs seek—known as an injunction, or a block on a challenged policy—can apply nationwide, or if courts may grant injunctions only to the states and individuals who have challenged the law. The AGs are standing up for nationwide relief, arguing that when a policy is illegal, it shouldn’t apply to anyone, no matter what state they call home.

State Attorneys General Leadership in Ending the School to Prison Pipeline

Addressing the school to prison pipeline speaks to the core work of attorneys general—keeping communities safe. Through driving solutions to break the school to prison pipeline, attorneys general can address key policy priorities of many of their offices: reducing juvenile crime and reducing the disparate impact of school discipline practices for Black and Brown students. Initiatives launched by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, in partnership with the National Education Association, have demonstrated how state attorneys general provide leadership in the effort to break the school to prison pipeline.
