On September 25, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of New York alleging that the state has failed to provide information about voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter rolls. The lawsuit alleges that New York and its Board of Elections violated the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Civil Rights Act of 1960 by refusing to produce a current, unredacted electronic copy of the state’s voter registration list, which contains sensitive personal data, and failing to provide information on the state’s voter list maintenance program or registration information for any ineligible voters.
