United States v. Maine, Secretary of State Bellows

The United States Department of Justice sues Maine alleging violations of federal voter registration list maintenance procedures because they are allegedly not removing "inactive" voters from the voting rolls fast enough and their overall voter registration numbers are deemed unusually high, and the federal government is demanding a list of all registered voters to scrutinize.

On September 16, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of Maine alleging that the state has failed to provide information about voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter rolls. The lawsuit alleges that Maine and its Secretary of State Shenna Bellows violated the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act , and the Civil Rights Act of 1960 by refusing to provide data about the removal of ineligible individuals from the voter rolls and failing to produce an unredacted, computerized state voter registration list. Maine expressed concerns over protecting the sensitive personal information of its citizens after the Department of Justice demanded an unredacted copy of the voter list, which would contain personally identifiable information, such as partial Social Security numbers.
