On December 12, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts alleging that Massachusetts has failed to provide information about voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter rolls. The lawsuit alleges that Massachusetts and its Secretary of the Commonwealth violated the Civil Rights Act of 1960 by refusing to produce a current unredacted electronic copy of the voter registration list. Secretary Galvin expressed concerns over the rights and privacy of the citizens of Massachusetts after the Department of Justice demanded unredacted voter list data, which would contain personally identifiable information, such as partial Social Security numbers.
On April 9, 2026, the court dismissed the Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Secretary Galvin for refusing to turn over an unredacted voter list containing every Massachusetts voter’s private information.
Today’s ruling is a decisive win for Massachusetts voters and the rule of law. The privacy of our voters is not up for negotiation, and I will continue to defend the integrity and security of our elections from the Trump Administration’s cruel and harmful agenda.Attorney General Andrea Campbell
