United States v. Caldwell, New Jersey Secretary of State

The Trump administration sues the state of New Jersey for refusing to hand sensitive voter information to the federal government.

On Feb. 26, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of New Jersey alleging that the state has failed to provide information about voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter rolls. The lawsuit alleges that New Jersey and its Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State, Dr. Dale Caldwell, violated the Civil Rights Act of 1960 by refusing to produce a current unredacted electronic copy of the state’s voter registration list. According to the lawsuit, New Jersey refused to provide the complete, unredacted statewide voter registration list, including voters’ full names, dates of birth, residential addresses, and either driver’s license numbers or the last four digits of Social Security numbers.
