On January 16, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of Virginia alleging that the state has failed to provide information about voter list maintenance procedures and electronic copies of statewide voter rolls. The lawsuit alleges that Virginia and its State Elections Commissioner Susan Beals violated the Civil Rights Act of 1960 by refusing to produce a current unredacted electronic copy of the state’s voter registration list. According to the lawsuit, Commissioner Beals refused to provide the complete, unredacted statewide voter registration list, including voters’ full names, dates of birth, residential addresses, and either driver’s license numbers or the last four digits of Social Security numbers.
