On March 24, 2026, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeking access to evidence needed to independently investigate three shootings by federal officers, including the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
In December 2025, DHS launched an immigration enforcement action in Minnesota called “Operation Metro Surge.” Thousands of armed and masked federal agents were deployed to the streets of Minnesota. During Operation Metro Surge, federal agents shot and killed two people and shot and wounded a third person. After these shooting incidents, Minnesota authorities attempted to investigate but were blocked from doing so. Federal agents initially indicated they would work with Minnesota authorities and share relevant information after two of the incidents but then backtracked on their pledges to cooperate. Federal authorities took exclusive possession of key evidence and denied Minnesota investigators access. Minnesota also submitted formal requests to DHS and DOJ seeking access to the evidence but were refused.
In its lawsuit, the State of Minnesota asks the court for access to the evidence requested in the three shooting incidents.
The federal government has locked us out and blocked us out. So, they’ve left us with no alternative except to go to court to force them to cooperate in what the federal government almost always does with no force: cooperate with local and state authorities on the investigation of crimes.Attorney General Keith Ellison
