AG Nessel seeks transparency on ICE’s plan to convert Romulus warehouse into mass immigration detention center

Published Date: Mar 5, 2026

AG Nessel submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request (PDF) to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), continuing her campaign for transparency regarding ICE’s plans to convert a Romulus warehouse into a mass immigration detention facility. The FOIA request follows a comment letter sent by the Attorney General last week raising concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding ICE’s activities related to the warehouse. In that comment letter, Attorney General Nessel specifically identified ICE’s failure to engage with state and local agencies regarding its purchase of—and plans for—the warehouse. ICE has continued to remain silent following the comment letter, providing no information about how it plans to convert the warehouse, when the warehouse will become operational, and who it plans to detain there.
