AG Campbell issues statement in response to supreme court decision in Louisiana v. Callais

Published Date: Apr 30, 2026

AG Campbell issued the following statement in response to today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Louisiana v. Callais, weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Section 2 prohibits voting practices or procedures that discriminate on the basis of race.

"Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a direct assault on the hard-fought rights and freedoms earned by generations of people of color and a major step backward for fair representation in our democracy. This decision will diminish the ability of communities of color to elect candidates of their choice at every level of government.  My office will continue to fight to protect the right to vote of every eligible Massachusetts resident and ensure that the promise of our Democracy remains accessible to all." – AG Campbell
